Mario Kempes, a former Argentina star who won the World Cup in 1978, has applauded Lionel Messi for his surprising move to Inter Miami last year.
The 36-year-old forward stunned the world in 2023 by leaving PSG and joining the MLS club, sparking a frenzy of Messi fans in the United States.
Messi’s influence at Inter Miami has been evident, and Kempes, his compatriot, has commended him for his decision to play in America.
Kempes told Infobae: “He is old enough to know what he wants. I think he did the right thing by coming to the United States.

“He will be more relaxed here, he will have more playing time than in Europe, which is more difficult, and maybe he can reach another World Cup.
“But the training will be completely different because of the adrenaline that you get in Europe, although the league here will attract more and more players from the strong leagues.”
