The Bafana Bafana of South Africa weathered their AFCON semifinal loss to Nigeria to defeat the Leopards of DR Congo in 2023 AFCON third-place playoff
It was another rollercoaster clash as the two teams fresh from their AFCON semi-final defeats crossed swords for the 2023 AFCON bronze medal.
The two teams battled with limited chances and struggled to establish clear dominance. After an early promising start by DR Congo, South Africa got back to gears later in the game.
It was still a tight and cagey affair but DR Congo slightly wielded more control than the Bafana Bafana. Nevertheless, it ended barren at the break.
After a relatively lackluster first 45, the two sides got the game back on track with a more clinical performance in the second half.
DR Congo seemed to lose it to the Bafana Bafana on the ball possession but were still fully in the game with frequent attacking threats when having the ball. With the hour-mark crossed, it was still barren at both ends as the two sides failed to break the goal deadlock.
South Africa were looking deadly as the game neared the end. The Bafana Bafana successfully stamped their dominance in the game with more control of the ball and were the better side going forward.
DR Congo dropped deeper as the pressure continued to mount. The Leopards successfully dragged the game into extra time and then spot-kicks as they stopped the Bafana Bafana from breaking the deadlock.
After a barren 120 minutes of action, the game headed into penalties where South Africa won 6-5 to win the 2023 AFCON Bronze Medal.
