Lazio pulled off a shock 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, thanks to a late penalty from Ciro Immobile. The Italian striker scored from the spot in the 89th minute, after Kim Min-Jae fouled him in the box.
It was a deserved reward for Lazio, who defended well and frustrated Bayern, who had more possession and shots but could not find a way through. Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel made some crucial saves, while Bayern’s Manuel Neuer was rarely tested.
The goal was Immobile’s 14th in the competition, making him the second top scorer behind Mbappe. It also gave Lazio a historic win, their first over Bayern in the Champions League.
Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel admitted his side were below par, and blamed the fatigue and injuries for their lacklustre performance. He said: “We were not at our best today. We lacked intensity and creativity. We have to accept the result and improve in the second leg.”
