Nigeria’s football team, the Super Eagles, made history in 2013 when they won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 19 years. They beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final in South Africa, thanks to a goal from Sunday Mba. The whole country celebrated their amazing achievement, but not everyone was happy for them.
The Association of Nigerian Prostitutes (ANP) had promised to reward the players with a week of free sex if they won the trophy. They announced their offer after Nigeria defeated the Ivory Coast, the tournament favourites, in the quarter-finals. Jessica Elvis, the ANP secretary, said in a statement: “We want to congratulate the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, for qualifying for the next round of the competition. To show our support for the national team, we’ll be declaring one week [of] free sex if the Super Eagles can win the trophy.”
However, the Super Eagles did not appreciate the ANP’s gesture. When one of the ANP leaders approached a top official of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) in South Africa to remind him of their prize, he rejected it harshly. He told them to “go to hell” and “get a life” and said that the Eagles played with passion and not because of their “stupid” promise.
Elvis expressed her disappointment in another statement. She said: “The Association of Nigerian Prostitutes (ANP) wishes to congratulate the Nigerian Super Eagles and indeed the entire nation for the successful outing of our senior national team in the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa 2013. We are happy just like every other Nigerian. Shortly after the victory on Sunday, one of our leaders met a top member of the Glass House in South Africa and informed him of our planned [prize] for the Eagles when they return to the country, but he out-rightly rejected our offer. We want to register our disappointment over the way we were turned down after our full support for the national team.”

The ANP’s offer was not the only controversial one that the Super Eagles received. A Nigerian witch doctor also claimed that he helped them win the trophy by casting spells on their opponents. He demanded a cow as a reward, but the NFF ignored him as well.
The Super Eagles did not need any external incentives to win the Africa Cup of Nations. They showed their talent, determination, and pride on the pitch. They earned the respect and admiration of millions of Nigerians and Africans, who cheered them on as they lifted the trophy. They also inspired many young footballers to follow their footsteps and pursue their dreams. They were the true heroes of 2013.
