Bayer Leverkusen have closed in on the 2023/24 Bundesliga title with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich at the BayArena.
Bayern Munich loanee Stanisic punished his parent club, firing Bayer Leverkusen into the lead in the 18th minute. Andrich triggered the attack that led to the goal, no thanks to a costly blunder by Upamecano.
Upamecano allowed Andrich’s low cross to slip through his legs to an unmarked Stanisic, who made no mistake beating Manuel Neuer with a right-footed finish from close range.
Against expectations, Bayer Leverkusen proved far more clinical than Bayern Munich even after the lead. They covered impressive offensive and defensive distance while thwarting the visitors’ attempt to flow naturally with possession.
Stanisic’s goal was enough to send the home side into the lead at the break with Bayern Munich showing no sign of a comeback.
The hosts maintained a similar ascendant trail as the second half kicked off. Five minutes into the second 45, Grimaldo doubled the lead. A brilliant combination play by Grimaldo and Tella saw the duo split open Bayern Munich’s defense with ease before Grimaldo blasted an effort into the roof of the net.
Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel made swift substitutions to twist the trajectory of the game all to no avail.
With a few minutes left to play, Bayern Munich mounted pressure in search of consolation and possibly pull a mysterious comeback. They had a corner in stoppage time but it was cleared by Tah for Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Manuel Neuer had come out of goal to help the Bavarians nod in the corner-kick.
Committing all eleven players forward, they were easily caught out by Bayer Leverkusen who proceeded on a counter after clearing the corner-kick. Tapsoba found Frimpong, who breezed pass Guerrero’s sliding tackle before firing into an open net to make it 3-0.
Bayern Munich could be literally out of the Bundesliga title race but would be too early to write off the Bundesliga giants from the title race. However, the loss to a spirited Bayer Leverkusen side at the Bay Arena could prove decisive in the Bundesliga title race.
The two teams had a lot to play for going to the game with just two points separating them at the top of the table. Irrespective of all possible permutations, Bayern Munich needed to avoid defeat at the hands of the Black and Reds to stay put in the Bundesliga title race. A draw or a win for the Bavarians would have been a better option but a defeat was certainly a nightmare as it would put the undefeated Xabi Alonso’s side fully in control of proceedings in the title race.
