The Black Stars kicked off their 2023 AFCON campaign with a defeat against Cape Verde before settling for a dramatic 2-2 draw with record-winners Egypt.
With just a point from their first two matches, they needed nothing less from victory in their final group game against Mozambique to stand a chance of booking a place in the knockout of the tournament.
Mozambique, on the other hand, also stood a chance to qualify for the next round of the competition with a similar trail of results as their Ghanaian counterpart.
The two sides went into the game on the same number of points, hence the six-pointer clash was poised for a nervy finish.
Ghana got the better of Mozambique from the start but could not make their dominance count before luckily winning a penalty which was converted by Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew.
The goal edged the Black Stars close to qualification to the next round but their chances were still slim as Egypt were on the ascendancy against Cape Verde in the other group match.
Nevertheless, Ghana needed a win against Mozambique to stay in contention. Ayew’s penalty goal was enough to send the Black Stars into the break with a lead.
In the second half, the African giants won another spot-kick. Ayew converted it again to bag his brace and double the lead for the Black Stars.
Leading by two goals, Ghana were edging close to a win to boost their chances of reaching the knockout. However, they were dealt a big blow when Mozambique also won a spot-kick in the first minute of stoppage time and converted it to halve the deficit
As Mozambique cut down their arrears, Ghana’s knockout hopes was on the frays as the Eagles continued to surge forward in search of an equaliser in a nervy final minutes of the game.
Three minutes after reducing the deficit, Mandava made it a nightmare final Group B clash for the Ghanaians. The Atletico Madrid left-back pegged back the Black Stars to a 2-2 draw with a stoppage-time goal.
At the blast of the final whistle, it ended squares between the two sides, who have now crashed out of the competition with Cape Verde and Egypt qualifying for the next round from the Group.
It was the second consecutive time Ghana have been eliminated from AFCON in the group stages after suffering a similar fate in the 2021 AFCON.
