Chelsea overcame their EFL Cup final heartbreak at Wembley to see off Leeds United in FA Cup 5th-round clash at Stamford Bridge.
It was a rollercoaster as the under-pressure billion pounds squad battled Leeds United for a place in the last 8 of England’s oldest football competition.
Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Conor Gallagher were all on target as the Blues survived Leeds United’s early scare to sail through to the quarterfinals.
Chelsea started on a poor note. A horrendous defensive display by the Blues saw the hosts fell behind the visitors early. Axel Disasi wanted to pass the ball to Caicedo but was intercepted by Gray. Gray passed the ball to Anthony, who laid it out to Joseph to finish pass Dorde Petrovic.
After conceding, Chelsea fought their way back into the game immediately through Nicolas Jackson in the 15th minute.
The Senegalese forward picked a throughball from Moises Caicedo, held off a Leeds United defender, and slotted the ball pass Leeds United goalkeeper Meslier to even the scores.
In the 37th minute, Chelsea turned around the game with their second goal. Receiving a pass from Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk fired into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-1.
The goal sent the Blues into the lead at the break but Leeds United weren’t ready to give away the game without a fight.
A minute before the hour mark, Joseph was again on target for Leeds United to bag his brace and peg back Chelsea to a 2-2 draw. Joseph nodded home a cross from Anthony to draw the game level.
The game nearly ended in a draw as both sides could not add to the tally after Joseph’s strike. Conor Gallagher scored in regulation time from Enzo’s assist to seal a 3-2 victory for the Blues.
After the EFL Cup final loss to Liverpool, Chelsea’s only hope of European football next season is in the FA Cup.
Hence, Poch will be hoping to break the pressure and lead the team to the trophy as he seals quarterfinal ticket.
