Arsenal stumbled to a defeat against Porto in the Champions League round 16 first-leg at the Estadio do Dragao in Portugal.
The hosts caught out the Premier League title hopefuls with a late sucker punch that condemned the Gunners to a defeat.
Galeno heroed through for the home side with a late screamer to stun Arsenal. Picking the ball from 35 yards out, Galeno lurched forward and fired a screamer pass sprawling David Raya to give the home side an unlikely lead.
It was a bitter ending for the Premier League side, who were dominantly in control of proceedings from start to finish. The game further delineated the weakness in Mikel Arteta’s side. With over 63% of the ball possession and firing seven attempts, Arsenal could not register even a single shot on target.
They completed more passes in the opponent’s box with a pass accuracy of 87%, won 10 corners, and had only one big chance in the game.
Meanwhile, despite playing second fiddle to the visitors, Porto were far more deadly on the counter. Galeno, who would score the winning goal, missed two big chances in quick succession in the first half, hitting the woodwork in one.
Arsenal’s chances came through corners but they could not convert. Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa was not tested throughout the game.
With Arsenal dominating proceedings from the start and Porto settling for the low blocks, the game lacked quality with not a single attempt in the first 15 minutes.
The first half ended barren but Porto nearly took the lead save Galeno’s missed chances. It looked like the largely uneventful game will end goalless before Galeno made amends for his first-half miss and came up clutch with a late sucker punch to hand the Portuguese giants the lead.
Arsenal will now hope to overturn the 1-0 deficit when they host the Portuguese side in England for the second leg in March.
