South Africa qualified for their first AFCON semifinal in 24 years after shoot-out victory over the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde, thanks to a terrific penalty-saving heroics by Ronwen Williams.
The game took on a frantic pace from the start as the two sides made well their attempts to outplay the other and take the lead.
Speedy counters, strong tackles, resolute defending, and excellent goalkeeping kept both sides at bare. There were chances for the Bafana Bafana as well as the Blue Sharks with the latter pulling more strings on the attack.
At the half-hour, it was still barren as both sides failed to break the deadlock. South Africa were reeling under pressure but a solid wall at the back kept them in the game.
There was no clear dominance going forward with the game subsequently ending barren in the first half.

Nothing changed in the second half. South Africa improved their game immensely but could not find a breakthrough in the Cape Verdians’ defense. Cape also had a good measure of the ball but failed to make the dominance count.
It was still barren with the second half far spent. Cape Verde came close to an incredible chance that would have turned the game around but squandered it.
Meanwhile, South Africa were trying to find their footing after minutes of Cape Verde’s dominance. The Bafana Bafana had a good deal of possession as their more determined opponents but could not make anything happen. The game was dragged into extra time after they settled for a 0-0 draw after regulation time.
In the first half of extra time, Cape Verde came close again to netting the winner but the South African goalkeeper produced a stunning save to keep it barren.
There was still no goal after extra time with the game heading into penalties. Ronwen Williams heroed through the shoot-outs, saving four penalties to hand Bafana Bafana a 2-1 shoot-out win over the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde.
