DR Congo prevailed against Egypt to progress to the quarterfinal of the 2023 AFCON, LCSoccerHub Reports.
In a tournament that has seen minnows in African football rewrite the narrative, DR Congo pulled another surprise, kicking out seven-time champions and 2021 finalists Egypt out of the tournament.
Mohamed Salah was a glaring absence in the game but the Egyptians weren’t lacking on the attack either.
Against the run of play, DR Congo swung into the lead with Meshack Ellia’s header in the 36th minute. After the goal, Egypt doubled up efforts, pressing harder to find an equaliser.
Battling to keep off their rampaging opponents, the Leopards retreated backward, dropping deep to defend and preserve the lead.
Egypt continued on the ascendancy, mounting pressure to find the equaliser, and finally got a lifeline to cut the one-goal arrear at the stroke of the first half.
DR Congo player Batubinsika was alleged to have fouled Ahmed Hegazi in the box and a penalty was awarded. Mostafa Mohamed converted the spot-kick effortlessly to level the scores before the break.
Egypt maintained their dominance in the second half of the game but were struggling to break through DR Congo’s defense.
Coming under intense pressure, DR Congo kept more players in their half to defend while hoping to catch the Pharoahs on the counter.
With few minutes left on the clock, the score stood at 1-1 as both sides failed to find the back of the net.

The game was dragged into extra time but nothing changed as DR Congo held on to salvage a draw and drag the game into shoot-outs.
All the selected penalty-takers from both teams scored their spot-kicks leaving the goalkeepers to determine the fate of their teams. Egyptian goalkeeper Gabaski missed his spot-kick while his counterpart Mpasi scored his to knock out the seven-time champions from the tournament.
DR Congo have now set up an AFCON quarterfinal clash with Guinea who edged out Equatorial Guinea 1-0 to qualify for the quarter-final.
