Atletico Madrid reached the Copa del Rey quarter-finals after a thrilling 4-2 extra-time victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid on Thursday.
Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme scored in the additional period to seal the win for the hosts at the Metropolitano stadium. Earlier, Barcelona scraped past third-tier Unionistas de Salamanca 3-1 in a nervy last 16 clash.
The Madrid derby was a pulsating affair, with both teams trading blows and goals. Samuel Lino gave Atletico the lead, but Jan Oblak’s own goal levelled the score for Real.
Alvaro Morata restored Atletico’s advantage, but Joselu equalised late on for Real. In extra-time, Griezmann and Riquelme struck to end Real’s 21-match unbeaten streak and avenge Atletico’s 5-3 loss to Real in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final last week.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti refused to admit that Atletico had the upper hand over his side. “I don’t think (Atletico have the measure of us), because we beat them a few days ago,” he said.
