Bayer Leverkusen boss Fernando Carro has dismissed the rumours of a clause that would let Xabi Alonso join Liverpool as their next manager. However, he admitted that he would be open to a discussion if the Reds came knocking.
Liverpool fans were stunned when Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season. The German has been a legend at Anfield, leading them to glory since taking over from Brendan Rodgers in 2015.
Now, the search is on for his successor, and one of the names that has emerged as a favourite is Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool star has been a revelation at Leverkusen, guiding them to the top of the Bundesliga and an unbeaten run.

But Carro has poured cold water on the speculation of a clause that would allow Alonso to return to his old club. He said that he has a great relationship with the Spaniard and that he hopes he will stay.
“We don’t have a clause, we don’t need one. Xabi knows that we respect his wishes and we won’t force him to stay if he doesn’t want to,” Carro told Ben Jacobs in an interview two months ago.
“Our goal is to make him happy and comfortable with us and to make him want to stay. There is no written agreement [for him to leave] but sometimes verbal agreements are just as valid. We know that if he wants to move in the future, we can talk to each other but I hope that he will stay.”
