Manchester United kept their hopes of finishing in the Premier League’s top four alive with a crucial 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday. The visitors scored an early goal through Rasmus Hojlund, but Douglas Luiz equalized for Villa in the second half. With four minutes left, Scott McTominay came off the bench and headed in the winner for United, who had lost twice to Villa this season.
United are still sixth in the table, but they have closed the gap to fifth-placed Villa and fourth-placed Tottenham to five and six points respectively. They have also won four games in a row in all competitions.
“It was a huge win for us. We wanted to get closer and we did it. I liked how we did it,” United manager Erik ten Hag said.
“We had to fight back after they equalized. It was a very open game, like a tennis match. But we showed the mentality and character to win.
“Scott is fantastic. He is a role model for many players. He is always ready to make an impact.”
Villa boss Unai Emery said: “We played well against a strong Manchester United, but we missed some clear chances.
“The result is hard for us and hard to accept, but that’s football. We played as we planned and we deserved more.”
United have improved their attacking form after struggling for goals for most of the season. They still face a tough challenge to secure a top four spot and qualify for the Champions League.
