Liverpool are reportedly keen on adding Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong to their squad, according to Football Insider.
The Reds have been in superb form this season, leading the Premier League with 45 points from 20 games. However, they have also been plagued by injuries, especially in their defence.
They have lost Joel Matip for the rest of the season due to a knee injury, while Andy Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas have been nursing shoulder issues and are expected to miss more games.
To make matters worse, Trent Alexander-Arnold has also suffered a knee injury and will be out of action for the next few matches.
This leaves Liverpool with only Joe Gomes as their senior fullback option, which could jeopardize their title hopes. Therefore, Jurgen Klopp’s side are looking to sign a new fullback in January to strengthen their backline and maintain their momentum.
Frimpong on Liverpool’s radar
Football Insider claims that Liverpool are interested in signing a new right-back to allow Alexander-Arnold to move into the midfield, and have identified Frimpong as one of their targets.
The report says that Liverpool have been tracking the progress of Frimpong, who has impressed at Bayer Leverkusen since joining them from Celtic last year. The report adds that the 23-year-old Dutch international has a £35m release clause in his contract, but it can only be triggered in the summer.
However, Liverpool are not the only ones who are eyeing Frimpong, as Manchester United and Arsenal are also said to be considering a move for the fullback. This means that Liverpool will have to fend off competition from their rivals if they want to secure his services.
Frimpong is a fast, skillful, and creative fullback, who can both create and score goals. He could fit well into Klopp’s system, if Liverpool manage to sign him.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will make a move for Frimpong in January, or wait until the summer to activate his release clause.
