Inter Milan extended their lead at the top of Serie A to four points with a narrow 1-0 victory over Juventus at San Siro on Sunday. The only goal of the game came in the 37th minute, when Juventus defender Federico Gatti inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after a cross from the right by Inter’s Federico Dimarco.
Inter dominated the possession and had more chances to score, but were denied by some excellent saves from Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The Polish shot-stopper kept out a volley from Nicolo Barella and a close-range effort from Marco Arnautovic, who came on as a substitute for the injured Marcus Thuram.
Juventus, who have more games than Inter, struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, as their star striker Dusan Vlahovic was kept quiet by the Inter defence. The Serbian forward missed a golden chance in the first half, when he failed to control a pass from Weston McKennie. He also tried an acrobatic overhead kick from a corner, but it flew over the bar.
The result means that Inter have won 18 of their 22 league games this season, scoring 51 goals and conceding only 10.
Juventus, who have won 16 of their 23 games, remain in second place, but are now four points behind their rivals.
