Girona missed the chance to close the gap on La Liga leaders Real Madrid as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Real Sociedad on Saturday.
The hosts, who are second in the table, had the better chances but could not find a way past the resolute defence of the visitors, who are seventh.
Girona’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski, who has 25 goals in all competitions this season, was denied by a superb save from Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro in the first half.
The Polish striker also had a goal ruled out for offside in the second half, while Ilkay Gundogan and Pedri also went close for Girona.
Sociedad, who have drawn 10 of their 23 league games, rarely threatened the Girona goal, but defended well and frustrated the home side.
The result leaves Girona eight points behind Real Madrid, who have a game in hand, and four points ahead of third-placed Barcelona, who beat Alaves 3-1 on Saturday.
Sociedad remain in the hunt for a European spot, but are six points behind fifth-placed Athletic Club, who won 2-1 at Osasuna.

Girona will hope to bounce back from the disappointing draw when they face Sevilla in the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg on Wednesday. They have a 2-1 advantage from the first leg.
Sociedad will also turn their attention to the cup, as they host Rayo Vallecano in the quarter-final second leg on Thursday. They trail 1-0 from the first leg.
