Brennan Johnson scored a stoppage time winner as Tottenham survived Brighton scare to grab a dramatic comeback win over the Seagulls in the Premier League.
The top-four hopefuls went into the game looking to break into the rank of Premier League heavyweights with the longest scoring streak in the competition.
They have scored in all their last 35 Premier League games. A goal against Brighton would see the Ange Postecoglou side draw level with Liverpool and Manchester United with an unbroken 36-match scoring streak in the Premier League.
Arsenal are still the only team with the longest scoring streak in the Premier League that has spanned 55 straight matches.
It was also a revenge fixture for Spurs, who lost only one of their last eight matches to the same opponent. Brighton headed into the game against a mountainous odd for victory. They had never completed a league double over Tottenham Hotspur and Spurs have been in red-hot form at home, snatching victories in six of their last home matches.
The first big chance in the game went to Brighton and it came as early as the first minute of action. Former Manchester United star Danny Welbeck picked up the ball after Van de Ven tripped over. Welbeck charged into the box and fired on goal but Vicario was equal to the task pointing it away.
Brighton steadily controlled possession and were more dominant going forward. Tottenham struggled to find their foot early in the game and could not match the visitors’ dominant display.
It was still an open game between the two sides as they made attempts to counter and dominate proceedings. In the 16th minute, Brighton won a spot-kick after Van de Ven tripped down Danny Welbeck in the box.
Pascal Gross converted the spot-kick, wrong-footing Vicario, who jumped to the left while the former fired to the right. It was a deserved lead for the Seagulls. The goal was enough to send the visitors into the break with the lead.
After a lackluster first-half display, Tottenham emerged with a more upbeat performance in the second half. The Lilywhites dominated the Seagulls, pushing hard for an equaliser. They finally found a reprieve a minute after the hour mark. Sarr scored the deserved equaliser.
Kulusevski had pierced through Brighton’s defense with a nice throughball. The Senegalese latched on it and fired a first-time effort which was blocked by Dunk. The rebound fell on a platter for Sarr again. This time, he made no mistake as he lifted it into the net to make it 1-1.
It was a nervy final 30 minutes for the two teams. Brighton stepped up their attacking prowess. Both sides came across several chances to take the lead but could not make them count. Spurs finally got the better of the Seagulls six minutes into stoppage time with Brennan Johnson, scoring the late-winner to snatch a win for the Lilywhites at the death.
The win has seen Tottenham leapfrog Aston Villa into 4th place on the table.
