The Red Devils returned to winning ways following Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest to book their place in the next round of the competition.
United dominated proceedings from the start, forcing the home side to their heels. It was just a matter of time before the ten Hag-led side take the lead.
Diogo Dalot opened the scoring for the Red Devils in 22nd minute. Despite taking the lead, United continued on their dominant performance throughout the first half.
Wigan made little effort upfront while battling to contain Man United’s incessant offensives. However, they closed in on a slew chances but could even the score.
Manchester United went into the break a better side with the 1-0 lead.
Nothing changed in the final 45 as United continued on their dominant run throughout the game. Despite coming under pressure, Wigan held their nerves to prevent the visitors from doubling the lead.
The goal drought in the second half was finally broken in the 74th minute. Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock, scoring from the spot to make it 2-0.
After trailing by two goals, Wigan made a late push to hit a consolation goal but United held on to secure the win.
The Red Devils will hope to continue on winning lanes when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
