Tottenham have closed up on the Premier League title race with a resounding 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Villa Park.
It was a battle for the Premier League Champions League slot this season as the two teams locked horns in a much-anticipated Premier League cracker.
The Villains went into the game with a five-point lead over Spurs in the top-four race. The London club needed victory to cut the point arrears and build momentum in the race.
Goals from James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-Min, and Timo Werner were enough to do the damage with Aston Villa surprisingly crashing to the rampant firing arsenal of Spurs in the second half.
It was a barren first half as both sides struggled to create meaningful chances in the game but Tottenham had a better game than the hosts.
Aston Villa recorded five attempts but did not test Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario who lazied on the posts throughout the first 45.
Tottenham equally struggled in the final third with no clearcut chances created.
In the second half, the Lilywhites ran riot, hurling a quick succession of goals to race into a four-goal lead.
James Maddison opened the scoring for Tottenham Hotspur in the 50th minute after he bundled Sarr’s cross into the back of the net from close range.
Three minutes after Maddison’s opener, Tottenham struck again through Brennan Johnson, thanks to an assist by Son.
Aston Villa ramped up attempts to regain their balance and possibly clawed their charges back to the game but it was a death end in Tottenham Hotspur’s final third.
In the first minute of stoppage time, all comeback hopes for the Villains were dashed as Son Heung-Min scored to make it 3-0.
Three minutes after Son’s goal, Timo Werner wrapped up the victory for the Lilywhites, scoring in the 90+4th minute to secure a 4-0 win for the away side.
The win has seen Tottenham move 2 points closer to Aston Villa in the top four, adding a layer of intrigue to the race for Champions League football next season.
