Liverpool are 2023/24 Carabao Cup champions. The Reds saw off Chelsea at Wembley to clinch their first of the expected quadruple this season.
It was a tense Carabao Cup matchup between the two English heavyweights. And it ended in a barren draw in regulation time.
The two teams could not boast of a clear dominance in the game. It was a battle of the midfield and defense. Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez starred for the Blues.
Marc Allister and Wataru Endo were also clinical for the Reds but could not break the goal deadlock. Ryan Gravenberch was taken off injured in the match after Caicedo stepped on his ankle.
Cole Palmer was constantly a threat for Liverpool on the right wing but Chelsea’s less-menacing attack were effectively quelled by Liverpool’s star-studded defense led by Van Dijk and Ibrahim Konate.
Goal threats in the game surfaced mainly through counters from both sides. Liverpool were deadly when charging forward as well as the Blues.
Raheem Sterling was able to put the Blues in front after one of Chelsea’s counters but the goal was ruled out after a VAR check affirm Nicolas Jackson was offside in the build-up.
Virgil van Dijk also got Liverpool in front heading home a set-piece but VAR chalked off the goal after Wataru Endo’s malicious blockade of a Chelsea player in the build-up.
Chelsea were more deadly on the counter in the final minutes of the game. Conor Gallagher missed a one-on-one chance with Keller twice after Chelsea counter.
Nicolas Jackson also had a chance to put the Blues ahead but was overran and marked out by Ibrahim Konate.
The competitive clash finally headed into extra time after a barren 90 minutes. After the first extra-time break, Chelsea were stung late by Virgil van Dijk’s 128th-minute header.
It was a nightmare moment to concede for the Blues but much to the delight of Liverpool. The goal was enough to hand Jurgen Klopp his first trophy of his quadruple-chasing campaign and a record-extending 10th EFL Cup victory.
