Manchester United have stumbled to a shock home defeat to Fulham in the Premier League in a big blow to their top-four hopes this season, LCSoccerHub Reports.
United needed to put the Cottagers to sword at Old Trafford to continue their push for a top-four finish but it was certainly going to be a herculean task with their most in-form striker Rasmus Hojlund sidelined.
Fulham saw off Arsenal in a Premier League shocker in December but it was still a dicey affair against the in-form Man United side that have won all their four fixtures in February.
Also, the last time the Red Devils lost at home to Fulham in the Premier League was in 2003 almost two decades ago, hence Marco Silva faced a tough test at Old Trafford.
It was a cagey start to the first half. A sloppy performance saw the two teams run out of early chances before the game was enlivened with a quick surge in attack by both sides.
Fulham slightly lost possession to Manchester United but maintained a good attacking posture in the game.
They recorded more attempts on goal and boast a superior xG than Manchester United.
United struggled to break through the white wall when with the ball all to no avail as Fulham matched their offensives with a strong defensive display.
At the break, it ended barren but the Marco Silva-led team were more promising. Rasmus Hojlund was a glaring absence for the Red Devils with Marcus Rashford struggling in the center-attack.
Fulham maintained their attacking threats in the second half as United continued to struggle with depleted chances in the game.
Five minutes after the hour mark, Nigeria international Calvin Bassey, assisted by Castagne, raced the away side into the lead.
Trailing by a lone goal, United ramped up their attempt to find an equaliser. After mounting pressure, Harry Maguire came to the rescue, rifling Bernd Leno’s rebound into the roof of the net.
The two sides were set to share spoils when Adam Traore broke on a quick counter and found Alex Iwobi unmarked inside the Man United box. The Nigeria international positioned to his right foot and fired into the bottom-right corner to restore the lead for the visitors.
Fulham grabbed their first win at Old Trafford since 2003 as it ended in shock 2-1 defeat for Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag will have to return to the drawing board as the team stumbled to a shock defeat to the Cottagers at Old Trafford.
