Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has deleted all posts on his Instagram handle a few hours after Nigeria lost the 2023 AFCON final to Cote D’Ivoire, LCSoccerHub Reports.
Iwobi, 27, made Jose Peseiro’s 2023 AFCON squad and was integral to the team’s progress in the tournament. The former Arsenal midfielder played all Nigeria’s AFCON matches from the opener against Equatorial Guinea to the final against Ivory Coast.
He was occasionally subbed off by Jose Peseiro for Moses Simon. Against Ivory Coast, Iwobi made the starting lineup and shared in the Super Eagles’ lackluster performance throughout the match.
While the whole team underperformed against Ivory Coast, some Nigerian fans seemed to single out Iwobi for backlash after the loss.
The fans insist the Premier League player did not show enough commitment and should have been benched in the match.
With the torrents of criticisms, Iwobi who boasts of 1.3million on Instagram, took to his page to delete all posts.
LCSoccerHub learned the Super Eagles midfielder was a target of hate comments by some disgruntled Nigerian fans expressing extreme emotions after the loss to Cote D’Ivoire.
It is believed the torrents of hate comments and cyberbullying must have prompted Alex Iwobi to take down all his posts on Instagram.
Just like every other Super Eagles player, Iwobi will be expected back to Fulham Football Club in the Premier League to resume action after the 2023 AFCON deadlock.
Nigeria lost their 8th AFCON final to the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire. Goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastian Haller canceled out William-Troost Ekong’s half-time header to hand the Ivoriens a deserved 2-1 victory at the Alassane Quatarra Stadium.
Ivory Coast defied the odds, emerging as the fourth-best third-placed team to go all the way to the final and win their third AFCON trophy.
