Manchester United are set to sweat with Lisandro Martinez’s injury again after the defender limped off Sunday’s Premier League match against West Ham United.
United breezed pass West Ham with a 3-0 victory with goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund. Lisandro Martinez’s injury apparently spoiled the party for some Man United fans after the game.
Famously tagged ‘the butcher’ for his heroic defensive performances, Lisandro Martinez returned to a rousing welcome by Man United fans after his lengthy injury layoff.
The World Cup winner tarried on the sidelines since last season after he picked up a metatarsal injury during Man United Europa League quarterfinals against Sevilla.
After initial attempts to manage the injury with superficial rehabilitation measures, a surgical solution was recommended. Martinez underwent surgery and missed the entirety of last season on rehabilitation.
He was back to action coming on as a substitute in Man United’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
He featured in the 4-2 FA Cup win over Newport County and was subbed on in the Premier League win over Wolves at the Molineux Stadium. His appearance against West Ham United was the second time he has started a game for United since September 2023.
Martinez went down against the Hammers after a collision with West Ham’s Vladimir Coufal. Appearing to jar his knee, he was quickly helped onto his feet and was able to continue with his game. However, he went down again a few minutes later and had to be subbed with Raphael Varane coming on.
After the game, Erik ten confirmed a worrying update on Lisandro Martinez’s injury blow.
In a quote shared by Fabrizio Romano, the Dutch gaffer revealed it is indeed bad for Lisandro Martinez and a big disappointment for the team after he had worked so hard to recover.
“I can’t say (what the situation is) but it doesn’t look good, so there’s a big concern.
“It seems bad. We have to wait, make the right diagnosis in the coming days, and then we will see. Hopefully, it is not too bad, we can only pray.
“He worked so hard to return and now after two games it looks like he has to sit some games out again.”
“I can’t say (what the situation is) but it doesn’t look good, so there’s a big concern.
“But we have to wait for what is the diagnosis and then we can tell you more.
“Of course, we do everything to get the right diagnosis and see what the damage is.
“He is very sad, very disappointed. We are all. We feel really with him.
