Atletico Madrid soared into the La Liga top four on Monday, thanks to Alvaro Morata’s header that sealed a 1-0 win at Granada. Diego Simeone’s side capitalized on Athletic Bilbao’s slip-up at Valencia on Saturday and leapfrogged them on goal difference, with a game in hand.
The Madrid giants are still 11 points behind the league’s surprise package, Girona, who top the table.
Atletico were sluggish in the first half against the struggling hosts, but Rodrigo Riquelme tested Augusto Batalla with a fierce shot in the 31st minute, before Antoine Griezmann hit the woodwork.
Morata made the breakthrough in the 55th minute, nodding in a Griezmann cross that VAR confirmed was onside. Samuel Lino also rattled the bar for Atletico, before Saul Niguez had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside.
